1815: Napoleon surrenders
1815: Napoleon surrenders Napoleon Bonaparte surrenders to British forces at Rochefort near Paris, France. His surrender signaled an end to nearly two decades of conflict and war with most European countries. He was exiled to the island of Saint Helena, an island in the South Atlantic Ocean that is 1,210 miles (1,950 km) off the western coast of Africa. Napoleon died on the island in May 1821, at the age of 51.
